Kyiv - Ukrainian Children's Cardiac Center
After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, much of Ukraine was plunged into deep poverty from which it still struggles to return. Kyiv is the capital, a city of 2.7 million people. The Ukrainian Children’s Cardiac Center (UCC) is emerging as a regional center of excellence in Ukraine. It is the most advanced hospital for pediatric cardiac care in the country. UCC handles the country’s most complicated cases, treating more than 1,000 patients a year. The main goal of the partnership with UCC is to assist them with continued development as a regional center of excellence and training center for medical professionals.
Children's HeartLink began partnering with UCC in 2007 when a team of medical volunteers from Seattle Children’s Hospital traveled to Kyiv for an assessment visit and to participate in the 3rd Annual Ukrainian Congenital Heart Disease Forum hosted by UCC.
In the past year, Children's HeartLink has supported a pediatric intensivist from the Cleveland Clinic to spend a week providing on-site training to improve the Center's intensive care services; two months of training for a Ukrainian intensivist at the Cleveland Clinic as a follow-up to the intensive care training; and a week-long visit by a volunteer team from Seattle Children's Hospital, focused on training the local team in cardiac surgery, cardiology and interventional cardiology.
Children's HeartLink has also supported the installation and maintenance of a teleconference system that was donated by the Seattle Children’s Hospital to UCC. Twice a month, 20-40 UCC staff and Seattle Children’s staff participate in a collaborative surgical case teleconference.
