Fortaleza, Hospital de Messejana

Partnership Overview:

Hospital de Messejana became a partner of Children’s HeartLink in 2015, with the goal of strengthening the clinical and organizational capabilities of its pediatric cardiac program. It is one of two programs in this region of north and northeast Brazil, with a total population of almost 70 million, that is capable of performing complex, high-quality surgeries, with capacity for future growth and development. Hospital de Messejana is a public hospital, and its pediatric cardiac program performs approximately 350 surgeries annually. The waiting list from the city of Fortaleza alone has 200 names on it. 

Geography & Demographics:

Fortaleza is a city of 2.25 million people, making it the fifth largest city in Brazil. It is located in the state of Ceará in the northeast coast of Brazil, which is one of the poorest states in the country. Fortaleza (Portuguese for fortress) is a port city on the Atlantic Ocean, with a strategic location facing huge markets in the US and Europe. Agriculture plays an important role in the economy, with fruits and nuts a major export. The industrial sector includes footwear, textile, chemical and food processing industries, with more recent investments in oil refining and steel production. Fortaleza was a host city for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The city and its urban beaches make it a popular tourist destination for the domestic Brazilian market.
