West China Hospital of Sichuan University, Chengdu

Partnership Overview:
West China Hospital of Sichuan University (WCH) is a public hospital and, with 4,200 beds, has the distinction of being one of the world’s largest hospitals. Nonetheless, the hospital is challenged with some of the same issues facing other pediatric cardiac programs in China: overwhelming need, limited resources and few staff specifically trained for diagnosing and treating children. Children’s HeartLink has partnered with the West China Hospital of Sichuan University (WCH) in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, since 2006. In 2010, WCH performed 742 pediatric cardiac surgeries, of which 695 were open-heart surgeries. Activities have focused on program development and planning, clinical capacity building, quality improvement, leadership development and distance learning.
 
Geography & Demographics:
Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan province in southwest China, home to an estimated 81 million people. The province is a major communications, IT and transportation hub and home to a world-renowned giant panda breeding center.
