First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University became a partner of Children’s HeartLink in 2014, with the goal of strengthening the clinical and organizational capabilities of the pediatric cardiac program. A public teaching hospital with 1,500 beds, the Level-A Tertiary hospital is the largest general hospital in the province, which has a population of 46 million. On an annual basis, 57,000 inpatients and 1.7 million outpatients are treated at the hospital. The pediatric cardiac program performs 100-200 open-heart surgeries annually, as well as 300 diagnostic and interventional procedures.
Geography & Demographics:
Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province in southwest China, has a population of 6 million. It is known as “The City of Eternal Spring” because of its pleasant climate and flowers blooming year round. Kunming was the gateway to the historic Silk Road that made trade possible with Tibet, Sichuan, Myanmar and India. Today it is a popular tourist destination. The region is home to some 26 ethnic minorities.
