The partnership with Nhi Dong 1 brought Children’s HeartLink back to the country where its work began. Nhi Dong 1 is a 1,200-bed children’s hospital providing services to children from 32 provinces in southern Vietnam, where two-thirds of the Vietnamese population lives. Nhi Dong 1 is one of the two public hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City with a viable pediatric cardiac program.
The number of children treated per year has steadily increased since Nhi Dong 1 began doing open-heart surgery in 2007, increasing to nearly 300 surgical and more than 800 interventional cases in 2012. In order for the hospital to effectively address its waiting list of 3-4,000 children, skill development and professional growth is needed for its staff. The objectives of this partnership are to strengthen the capacity of pediatric cardiac services provided and increase the number of patients treated, and promote the development of the hospital as a regional center of excellence in care and training.
